Circle of Coherence

People in networks relate to each other through patterns of interaction. The Circle of Coherence visualises basic interaction patterns recognised in daily practice. Patterns depicted within the circle contribute to the coherence of the network, whilst those on the outside break it down. Each destructive pattern requires a different type of intervention to restore health in the network.

Coherence
The unity and level of organisation within a structure, eg. task division, specialisation and functional arrangement rules. A coherent network also develops identity. The more coherent it is, the better it can respond to its environment.

Vital Space
A nourishing environment, with a sense of balance between freedom and connection. Vital space is created through constructive patterns of interaction, and is at the heart of a healthy network.

Interaction Pattern
A more or less predictable sequence of behaviours in a network.

Constructive Pattern
A pattern of behaviour which helps to build coherence in a network.

Destructive Pattern
A pattern of interaction which weakens the coherence of a network.

Escalating Pattern
When the behaviour of one accelerates similar behaviour in the other, and vice versa. Destructive patterns are always escalating, as the perceived misdoings of others are used to justify increasing retaliation.
